My Photographic Style

My Photographic Style

I wrote a blog post earlier in the year which focused on Before & After photos and made a little video to show you how I edit (re-posted below for those who missed it!). But today I thought I would share details on how I manage my consistent photographic style, including both capturing images and post-production editing.

Tones

I love to create natural images with neutral tones so that the babies in my images are the key focus. You will see lots of white backgrounds and lovely textured wraps in cream, light brown and grey. For girls, I will throw in a baby pink headband and wrap, and for boys I love a set of tan teddy bear ears.

Image Setups

Formal family portraits in my studio are always shot in front of my big windows, which creates a clean white backdrop, ensuring that the family are the main focus point. For newborn and baby photos, I use my beautiful floorboards as the backdrop which fits in perfectly with my love of earthy and natural tones. I complement these with lovely wooden bowls and props to ensure that each client gallery is consistent.

My outdoor photo shoots I’m always looking to feature beautiful old trees with rich red and brown tones; lush green grass; native florals and plenty of golden leaves. These settings help kids relax as they go hunting for special shaped leaves and pinecones.

Editing

The editing is the last piece of the puzzle and plays less of an important role, but does help complete a consistent gallery. When editing, I use a range of Photoshop actions from Greater Than Gatsby to ensure that the images all contain similar warm tones. I look for images that are lacking yellow/orange and add these soft and subtle tones over the top of the images.

If you’re interested in having a chat about a photo shoot for you and your family, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Children grow up so quickly, so I know that you will cherish some beautiful images (with you in them!) that you can keep forever. I shoot from my Dundrum home studio or in the beautiful Airfield Estate gardens on Saturdays and Sundays.
